It’s official, in 2023 the car insurance sticker affixed to the windshield of cars should disappear. Also known as the green sticker, this insurance sticker should no longer be mandatory in 2023, according to the statements of the Minister of Economy Bruno Le Maire. The latter assured that his ministry and that of the Interior “were working to remove this sticker”, during a press conference organized following a working meeting with representatives of the insurance and mutual sector.

Already widespread in 18 European Union countries, the dematerialisation of the car sticker should avoid the sending of 50 million administrative documents to French motorists every year. It is a consequence of the establishment of the insured vehicle file, which directly allows the police to obtain information on the insured’s contracts.

The French are in favor of this saving measure

Rather favorable to this abolition of the green sticker, insurers are going in the direction of the French who – according to a YouGov study carried out for the neo-insurance Leocare in June 2021 – want 70% dematerialisation. According to Christophe Dandois, co-founder of Leocare, “the printing, packaging and sending of the green card costs a total of 1.36 euros”.

Even the disappearance of the adhesive is environmentally friendly

The entrepreneur assures “that at least 60 million euros could be saved every year”. Leocare also estimates that 1,237 tons of CO2 are produced each year to manufacture and ship the little green sticker. Removing the sticker could finally save 35 euros for motorists who forget to affix or replace each year, in the event of an inspection.

The exact end date of the obligation to have a car insurance sticker on the windshield is not known at the time of writing these lines.

3 questions about the end of the car vignette

When is the car insurance green sticker expiring?

No specific date has been given by the government for ending the obligation to put an insurance sticker on the windscreen of every car. The Minister of Economy Bruno Le Maire, however, assures that this provision should enter into force during the year 2023.

Is required?

Despite the introduction in 2019 of a file of insured vehicles that police and gendarmes can consult, yes, the car insurance sticker remains mandatory. This green stamp sent by insurers to each insured motorist must be affixed to the windscreen of the car linked to the stipulated contract. Failure to affix this insurance certificate or affixing an expired vignette will be punished with a fine of 35 euros.

Why will it disappear?

Ending the need for the car insurance sticker on the windshield of cars is an economy measure. It should avoid sending 50 million administrative documents. According to information from neo-insurance Leocare, the discontinuation of this green sticker is expected to save “at least 60 million euros”, since the cost of manufacturing, packaging and shipping of each sticker is estimated at 1.36 euros. Leocare also ensures that 1,237 tons of CO2 are produced each year to produce and send the car insurance sticker to policyholders.

In short

Every year, insurers send 50 million documents to pass on the car insurance sticker, also called the green sticker, to motorists. This compulsory vignette should disappear in 2023, as announced by Bruno Le Maire in September 2022.
