If until now the highway code that we passed for the car license was the same for the motorcycle license, from 1 March 2020 things will change. A motorcycle license to pass, the modified plateau test, Assurland provides an update on these innovations.
Highway Code: what specificities for the motorcycle licence?
The motorcycle circulation code, called “biker theory test” (ETM), will replace the 12 files that until now had to be learned by heart. In addition, this exam will be mandatory in order to hope to obtain the precious sesame that will allow you to obtain a motorcycle license. And this, even if you have recently outgrown your car licence. In fact, until now, if you passed your two-wheeler license within 5 years of obtaining your B license, you didn’t need to repeat the code. All you had to do was complete the driving hours and pass the practical test. But from 1 March 2020it will no longer be possible, change the new motorcycle licence.
How will it happen? From now on, you will need to answer a total of 40 questions laid on 9 different themes. Of all the questions, 35 of them will need to be answered correctly for the ETM to be validated. After that you will have 5 years to pass the driving test and get a motorbike licence. For further details, the 9 topics questioned concern:
- Legal provisions on road safety;
- the driver ;
- the street ;
- other road users;
- general and miscellaneous regulations;
- how to help;
- mechanical elements and other elements related to safety;
- safety elements for vehicles, motorcycle equipment;
- and finally, the rules of use of the vehicle in relation to respect for the environment.
Just like for the car licence, the highway code for two wheels will take place in an authorized examination center (La Poste, Bureau Veritas or Dekra for example) and will cost €30 to candidates.

Motorcycle licence: modifications for practical tests
The first practical test, called “off-road test” or “the plateau”, will also undergo some changes. The 5 parts that made up the test remain unchanged. It will therefore always be necessary:
- move the motorcycle with the engine off;
- complete a route at reduced speed without a passenger;
- perform braking;
- take a slow ride with a passenger;
- and avoid obstacles.
So what’s changing? Until now, these different parts have been performed in two separate exams. From now on, they are connected and the candidate will have 10 to 15 minutes to run them. What is also changing is that it will now be possible to do so set foot 3 times down (against two before) without being penalised. Any fall is elimination, but each candidate will have the right to do so 2 attempts in case of failure on the first.
For the second practical test, theoutstanding test, sees his time increase by a quarter of an hour, going from 30 to 45 minutes. We will start with the technical checks, which had previously been carried out during the off-road event. In addition, a new point will be evaluated: the safety trajectory. This corresponds to knowing how to opt for the best positioning on the road and when cornering to avoid accidents as much as possible. And the latest news is that, if until now 17 points allowed to validate the test, it will be necessary to obtain a total of 21 out of 27 points to get motorcycle driving licence.
And don’t forget, if you come to pass the exam and buy a car, motorcycle insurance is mandatory for two-wheelers!
