The Jaguar XJS is a great car and, in standard form, cheap to buy if you are
feel bold
. However, it hasn’t quite escaped that 80s chintz, chrome and smell from the darkest days of the British car industry (a musty velvet smell, if you will) not quite behind it yet.
Of its time, sure, but what a piece of kit
This one is a little different though. Stripped of plated spangles, bodykitted and fitted with 485bhp worth of 6.0-liter V12, there’s definitely a ton more attitude about it. And somehow it seems to have driven through the 80s and out the other side through the sheer force of nature. There’s not much soft and fluffy look to this bruise, the manual transmission further adds to its furry appeal. A hairy chest that you’d feel honored and obligated to show off with some jewels nestled inside, if you rode it. And if you’re not hairy enough then bad luck, you don’t qualify.
There were more powerful XJSes about it, 7,0 and even 7,4 liter conversions available, one of the latter from Forward Engineering also available in PH classifieds for almost half the money asked for it. And the TWR ones have an extra degree of official recognition. But Lister’s ties to Jaguar are also well known, so there’s a provenance beyond a lairy bodykit and big-capacity V12. Tough as nails on the outside, Lister has kept the more luxurious feel on the inside and the cream leather is perfectly fitting for a car of this era.
A comfortable place to foolishly scare yourself
Fast Jags always have a sense of caddish charm about them, more so with this one thanks to an eye-catching combination of muscle-car mechanics and just enough traditional class to pull it off. £30,000 is a lot of money for an old XJS, isn’t it. But, one of only 33 apparently built, you’ll be hard-pressed to find one like it.
